Review before the Mod | Harley Benton DC-Junior FAT
Update: Don't get the "Wilkinson GTB Adjustable Wraparound Bridge" for this guitar. That bridge needs bridge pins that are a bit further back to intonate correctly, so it's not a direct replacement for this guitar.
Before I transform this guitar into a fretless, it's time for a quick review of this Harley Benton DC-Junior FAT.

Is it possible to change a fretboard to a lighter color? Today we are bleaching a fretboard to see what it would look like, and/or if that could make a convincing maple-ish looking fretboard. We're using a DIY 2 step bleach, with Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2). And we're using masking tape to see if we can get crisp lines. I am gluing a broken headstock/neck of a brand new Epiphone Les Paul Standard 50s (Vintage Sunburst) back together, using PVA glue. Thats how I start the finish, they I spray nitro over that so it wears quicker and gives it an amazing worn in look.
that's a good idea, it uses the advantage of Nitro being compatible to oil finishes.
Hy! Could you please write me a thorough tutorial step-by-step, on how to install a push/pull switch for the series/paralell game? I want to have the bass just as it is so 2 vol. 1 tone but also a push/pull for the series/paralell. Many thanks in advance!
@@mechancik87 you can try this schematic guitarelectronics.com/1-humbucker-1-volume-series-parallel/ Having 2 volumes for the parallel mode might be difficult. Maybe that's only possible with 3 volumes: a master volume and a volume for each coil

How long did you bake it for?
Several hours, but in a proper "wood torrefying" oven (high temperature, no oxygen). Sadly, my kitchen oven wasn't even large enough to fit a jaguar body :s

Nice job. I have an American '61 re-issue Strat that I bought a Warmoth neck for. I've been playing it over 15 years. Warmoth makes some of the best after market necks and bodies out there. I highly recommend them.
I used the fixed "lightning" type bridge - intonates really well and you can get the action down. I'm really surprised they've stuck with this bridge as everybody comments on the action restriction. I do a demo over on my channel, though changed the wiring to output loading (50's wiring) and also the pots to 250k to tame the inherent brightness of the non stacked P90 pickup (quite good really) and quite acoustically bright guitar.
I think I know which bridge you mean, that sounds like a good idea. The Wilkinson bridge that I was showing in the video ended up not working well, it needs the posts at a further back location.
Which bridge did you exactly put? And did you do any more changes?
@@Chanzo__ the Wilkinson wraparound bridge ended up being the wrong choice, as it needs the bridge pins positioned further back. So I ended up recessing the bridge posts and using the original bridge. I'll show that in my next video
What do you think about the bridge @valleywoodstudio7345 is talking about? I really like this guitar (the wood) but I'm mad at the playability with the serial bridge, and the pickup is noisy for my taste so I'm trying to improve this guitar as much as it lets.

That finish turned out so good. What was the cost of the oils and dyes? I'm wondering if it is worth it to apply myself or if i should have Warmoth paint it in their vintage tint color?
The keda dye set is just around 20$, but it'll last you a long time. The Tru Oil costs 12$, I think, and a spray can of satin nitro costs maybe 15$.

i asked my luthier to do the same to my harley benton pj5 but he refused cause the paint job will cost more than the value of the bass. So sad

The tone from the duesenberg is the worst out of the 3, respectfully. I am really arguing over putting a les trem in my guitar or not, but because of this video I am really think about giving up on it.
BUT! I have to say it's personal taste. I found the roller bridge/stop tail the one that handled the frequencies better, but some will find it too muddy.
@@fbaraky660 to me the drawback is mostly the tuning stability. While not as bad as with a Bigsby, a stoptail will always be more stable than any trem system.

You said "white spirits" were used to thin the tru oil. Please tell me what you mean by white spirits. I think you mean paint thinner, but I''m not sure, please be specific as to what you used for thinning.
"white spirits" could also be called "mineral turpentine". Those are just translations to the product that I've used. But paint thinner or naphta will also do the trick.

I've tried it out just now and you almost don't have to re tune. The strings go sharp just a tiny bit

If that's the concern, then there is another version of the Les Trem by "Göldo" which doesn't have the large round thing that the arm is inserted in. Instead it's a simple arm connection like on a Bigsby.

Im no guitar builder but i understand how the truss rod works. I have worked with the "liquid wood" before. Are you not worried that the epoxy will affect the truss rod operation at all? Not throwing shade. Like i said, im no builder. Genuinely just curious.
you're right to be concerned. The way I did it was risky. While I was gluing on the fretboard, I made sure to rotate the truss rod every once in a while (in it's "dead zone" where it wouldn't bend the neck). And luckily, none of the epoxy grabbed the truss rod in the end. Next time I glue on a fretboard, I'll do a cleaner job.

no, dont think the pickup was wrong. its a copy of the gibson p100. it had like 10 k in silent stacked mode (coils in parallel, not series) and scorching humming 20k in split mode. normal humbuckers wire their coil in series, this in parallel. 2x20k in parallel=10k resistance? anyway.
My Jazzmaster has an angled neck pocket and original bridge with 9-46 strings and they don't jump out of the small grooves no matter how hard I hit it. Try shimming the neck to get more pressure on the bridge.
